AI agents for professional firms: what they can and can't do today

An AI agent is software that does a defined job for your firm, using your firm’s own data and rules, and hands the result to a person to approve. • Be perfect. Agents make mistakes. Good systems are designed around review, not around trust.

Where to start

Look for work that is repeated across many clients, deadline-bound, mostly gathering and checking with judgment at the end, and reviewable against a clear right answer. Most firms have several candidates; a readiness review ranks them by value.

What to require before client data is involved

• Is each firm’s data isolated at the database level, not just in the application?
• Is your data encrypted with keys specific to your firm?
• Is any AI model that sees your data bound by zero-retention, no-training terms?
• Is there a permanent record of every approval and every model call?
• Can data be held and deleted under the retention rules in your agreement, including legal hold?
• Does a person approve every output that leaves the firm?
