AI agents for accounting firms: a person still reviews the draft

AI agents for accounting firms do one preparation job, then stop for a person to review. Co-founded by a CPA. Not a product ranking.

AI agents for accounting firms: a person still reviews the draft

This guide does not rank products. A fit agent does one preparation job, then stops for a named person to review. Precision AI OS is an implementation firm. Steven de la Fe, CPA, is a co-founder.

Our own tax practice runs on Precision AI OS. A person was in the loop for less than five minutes per return. Not a client result. The accounting and tax page publishes that account. It is not a promise that another firm will see the same time.

What can a CPA firm run?

These jobs match how Precision scopes an engagement. Each is an illustration of work an engagement can cover, not a claim that a firm’s software is already connected. The AI agents service uses the same shape: agreed inputs, checks the team already applies, a draft a reviewer can inspect, and a stop when the input is incomplete.

  • Document collection. Compare what arrived with the request list, and prepare the follow-up. Sends are held for approval by default.
  • Consent packets. Hold processing of return information until the written consent the firm requires is on file. Confirm the wording with counsel.
  • Draft preparation. Assemble the checklist, source documents, and open items so review starts from a file.
  • Exceptions. Flag what is missing, unreadable, or conflicting, and leave that item for a person.
  • Notices. Match a notice to the client and year. A person writes the response.

Who reviews the draft?

NIST says processes for human oversight are defined, assessed, and documented. IRS Issue 2026-19 (June 24, 2026) says “it is incumbent on any tax professional using GAI to carefully review all documents crafted by the technology.” In that issue, GAI means generative artificial intelligence. By default, a named reviewer sees the draft before it goes to a client. The agent prepares. The person decides.

  • Record. Approvals and model calls are recorded. The security page describes that record.
  • Uncertainty. Incomplete or uncertain work goes to a person.
  • Effort. Checking the output has to be lighter than doing the preparation from scratch.

What stays with the firm?

A draft checklist is not a filed return, a signed letter, or a message to a client. The accounting and tax page covers separating each client’s data and the consent check before AI processes return information. This guide does not replace that page or your counsel’s reading of it.

The AI data pipeline connects the systems and files an agent is allowed to read. It does not replace the tools your team uses.

Where should an accounting firm start?

Pick one engagement type and one bottleneck, such as files still incomplete at first review.

  1. Access. The sources can be reached with the right permissions.
  2. Standard. A process owner can say what a good draft looks like.
  3. Repeatable. The steps can be written down.
  4. Review. Someone has time to review the output.

If those are not true yet, clarify the process or prepare the data. AI strategy ranks the first job. AI agents is where an agreed job is tested on your examples and handed to a named reviewer. We do not promise time savings before that test.

Where Precision fits, and where it does not

Precision fits when the job crosses the systems the firm already uses and a named person will review the draft. It does not fit when the AI inside software you already pay for covers the job. Check that first. It also does not fit a firm that wants a tool its own team configures alone. We build, run, and maintain the agreed agent.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI agents fit an accounting firm?

This guide does not rank products. A fit agent does one preparation job, such as collecting documents, preparing a draft, or listing exceptions, then stops for a named person to review. Precision AI OS is an implementation firm. Steven de la Fe, CPA, is a co-founder.

It is not a product list.

What are AI agents for accounting?

They are software scoped to one accounting preparation job, such as collecting documents, preparing a draft or listing exceptions. They work from the firm's authorized records and hand the result to a person to review.

They are not a general chatbot, and in this preparation scope they do not sign, file or send client communications.

Are accounting AI agents the same as the AI inside one software product?

Not always. AI inside a product you already pay for can be enough for work that stays in that product, so check that first. A separate agent is worth considering when the job needs records from more than one system and a person still has to approve the result.

The accounting and tax page describes when the software you have is enough.

Will AI agents for accounting replace preparers or reviewers?

No. They take on preparation so people can spend more time on review, judgment and clients. Professional judgment, signatures, filings and client communications stay with your team.

What does a person still approve?

By default, anything that would go to a client, and any item the agent cannot resolve because it is missing, unreadable or conflicting. The reviewer decides. We do not promise that the draft is accurate before your team has checked it against the firm's own examples.

Who reviews the draft in Precision's own tax practice?

Our own tax practice runs on Precision AI OS. A person was in the loop for less than five minutes per return. Not a client result.
